What Is Direct Action?
Direct Action is a tactical card game that captures the elite strategies, deception, and high-intensity combat of special operations. Developed, tested, and used by real-world special operations veterans—and grounded in the proven theory behind history’s most daring missions—Direct Action is more than just a game. It’s a training tool developed and used by military professionals.
Game Overview
Each player takes on a dual role: leading their own special operations team while simultaneously controlling the opposing forces and the environment that challenges their adversary. Players must continuously adapt to new situations as they arise and balance immediate tactical gains versus strategic foresight, requests for resources, contingency planning, intelligence priorities and many more crucial aspects of special operations.
Game Background
Direct Action is based on the publicly available Theory of Special Operations by Vice Admiral William H. McRaven, first published in 1993. This theory serves as the backbone of the game mechanics, transforming core special operations concepts into dynamic, engaging gameplay.
Gamifying Theory
The principles and dynamics outlined in the theory are directly reflected in the game’s design, offering players a unique opportunity to understand and apply them in a realistic and interactive format.
Sensitive Information Considerations
All imagery in the game is generated using publicly available, open-source AI tools to ensure no classified or sensitive material is used.
Game Development
Direct Action is currently in the prototype phase, with the seventh iteration undergoing testing to strike the right balance between realism, playability, and resource management.
The first edition available for purchase is scheduled to launch in winter 2025 and will be manufactured exclusively within the European Union and Ukraine. The basic version, titled Direct Action – Spec Ops Unleashed, includes the core components needed for a head-to-head duel where players compete to execute the most successful special operation.
